MalacaƱang said it will let the Commission on Elections (Comelec) decide on the proposal to extend the period for voter registration due to the imposition of the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) in several areas in the country.
“Ang Comelec naman po ay isa na namang constitutional body at sila talaga ang merong hurisdiksyon para mag conduct ng mga eleksyon. Nasa kamay po yan ng Comelec,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in a virtual presser Thursday.
“Do we agree? Well, we leave it to the Comelec dahil ang presidente naman and the Comelec chairman and commissioners have the same access to the same information that we all know is happening: Meron pong pandemiya,” added Roque.
Several groups and individuals called for the Comelec to extend voters’ registration with the two-week lockdown in Metro Manila and other localities.
The poll body, however, said there will be no extension of the registration period beyond the September 30 deadline.
Aside from the National Capital Region, Laguna, Iloilo City and Cagayan de Oro City are also under the most restrictive ECQ.
