Does Kiko Pangilinan really know how to run a business?

This is what President Rodrigo Duterte after the husband of megastar Sharon Cuneta questioned the Department of Health’s bias for China’s Pharmally over local suppliers of face masks and personal protective equipment (PPE).

“Ano bang negosyo mo ngayon, Pangilinan? Kung ikaw magpasok ng negosyo, malugi ka, g*** ka?” said Duterte in a briefing.

“Ito, imported ‘to lahat. So kung ikaw …you are in the business, it would be a Chinese, a Russian. It could be an Indian or African. Pagka pumasok ka ng negosyo, kailangan kumita ka. Magpalugi ka, g*** ka. Following your theory, ganoon talaga,” Duterte added.

Pangilinan questioned why the DOH, through the Procurement Service-Department of Budget and Management, why it awarded the bulk of the face mask and PPE supply contracts to Pharmally which was backed by presidential business special consultant Michael Yang. Pangilinan claimed local suppliers were made to wait and the specifications were tailored for Pharmally. “Parang ang lumalabas dito, dini-dribble ‘yung lokal, kasi nga mayroong favored na supplier,” said Pangilinan.

Duterte explained that with doctors and hospital staff in dire need of face masks and PPES in the months after the global lockdown in March 2020, only China had the supply at hand to deliver to the Philippines.

“Bakit ang China mayroon?” Because China all along were wearing masks even before the pandemic… Maglabas ka ilang beses, mag-mask ka because of the pollution sa kotse. Kaya iyong mga tao doon sanay kaya may — may pondo sila. Kaya itong mga trader, alam nila kung saan ‘yung hanapin kaagad pagsabi ‘kailangan nito’, madali na nilang
hanapin doon. Hindi ‘yang sabihin mo na i-manufacture overnight, minadali para makaabot ng mga bidding,” said Duterte.

Duterte said he does not care if Pangilinan and other senators crucified Pharmally because as far as he was concerned, the government has fulfilled its duty of providing face masks and PPEs to frontliners in the middle of the pandemic in 2021.

“Ikaw, Pangilinan, magsasali ka pa para marinig ka lang. Marami kayong dapat wala diyan. Eh Pangilinan, you should not be there. You have not contributed any — any meaningful legislation sa ating bayan. Puro agriculture-agriculture kayo, kinakain mo naman steak,” said Duterte alluding to Pangilinan’s hobby as a a farmer.
