Why slash the budget of a premier government hospital in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic?

Former Vice President Jejomar Binay has slammed the government for proposing a lower budget for the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) in 2022. Such move only demonstrated the government’s poor pandemic response and “misplaced priorities,” the former veep said.

There is no way the administration can justify its decision to cut the budget of PGH during a pandemic. Ang PGH ang ospital ng mahihirap nating kababayan. Nakita na natin ang kakulangan ng pasilidad ng PGH pero sa halip na dagdagan ang budget, binawasan pa. (1/3)

If the PGH budget cut is still an extension of the administration’s ideological war against UP, it is misguided and wrong. It also underscores the disastrous management of the pandemic and misplaced priorities in the 2022 budget. (2/3)

Congress should not only restore the budget of PGH but increase it. This will correct an unforgiveable act of neglect not only for the value of academic freedom in a democracy but public health during a disastrous pandemic.
