The overall condition of education in the country has improved during the Duterte administration, Education Secretary Leones Briones said.
In her report to President Rodrigo Duterte last Friday, Briones said the Department of Education (DepEd) has built more infrastructures and facilities, raised teachers’ pay, and modernized teaching methods in the last five years.
“During the past five years, Mr. President, we have continually addressed the challenge of quality in basic education. We are now concentrating on quality since we were successful in increasing enrollment levels. So it’s not quantity alone but quality as well,” according to her.
Briones said since Duterte assumed position in 2016, budget allocation for education has significantly increased.
This, she added, allowed DepEd to utilize more funds.
Enrollment recorded an increase of 8.45 percent (26.23 million students) from 2019 figures despite the Covid-19 pandemic, the secretary reported.
Briones said the department was able to build 150,149 new classrooms compared to the 2010 to 2016 period with only 118,000 classrooms; and constructed 12,786 technical and vocational laboratories during the same period.
A total of 103,548 classrooms were repaired and rehabilitated compared to 35,804 for similar period, she also said.
The DepEd chief noted that her agency also increased teacher salaries, noting that a teacher at the lowest level position now earns P23,877 per month from P19,077 per month.
“By the time you end your administration in 2022, the lowest salary rate of a teacher, lowest grade is P25,439, and not the pittance, which has also been described by various sources,” Briones told the President.
She added that DepEd has established the Education Futures Programme, which aims to strategically evaluate and integrate trends and advancements in learning and teaching processes.
“Like for example, the possibilities now of robot teachers, which are being studied in other countries. Brain implants, machines, which are so much better than humans, and how can humans remain human in the light of all these fascinating developments,” the official explained.
