Duterte asks Dick: ‘Are you investigating in aid of legislation or in aid of your personal political interest?’

President Rodrigo Duterte claimed on Thursday that Senator Dick Gordon is eyeing a vice presidential bid in 2022.

Duterte accused Gordon of using the Senate investigation on the purchase of alleged overpriced personal protective equipment by the national government for political gain.

“[Is your] investigation in aid of legislation or in aid of your personal political interest? I heard that you want to run for vice president next year and you want to impress the opposition that they would consider you,” the Chief Executive said during his second public address this week.

“Totoo ba ito, [Senator] Gordon? Alam mo tatakbo rin ako. Kung mag-usap lang tayo, pwede namang ikaw ang maging vice president kung karapat-dapat ka. So, I would know if you talk to me about your political plans. Kung interesado ka, makipag-usap ka at tignan natin,” he added.

Gordon is the chair of the blue ribbon committee investigating the alleged anomalous procurement of Covid-19 medical supplies.

In his speech, Duterte also questioned Gordon holding two posts as a senator and chairman of the Philippine Red Cross (PRC).

“If Red Cross is also a government agency, tapos member ka ng Congress… at the same time, eh medyo malabo ata ‘yang ginagawa mo,” he said.

“If I am wrong, which is a possibility also of a wrong interpretation, paki-clear lang nitong of you holding two government agencies,” he added.

PRC is an independent and autonomous non-government organization tasked to help the Philippine government in the humanitarian field.
