President Rodrigo Duterte has appointed Vice Admiral Leopoldo Laroya as the new commandant of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG).
In a statement Wednesday, the PCG said Laroya, the current deputy commandant for operations, will replace outgoing PCG chief Admiral George Ursabia Jr. who will retire today, September 8.
“President Rodrigo Roa Duterte has appointed CG Vice Admiral Leopoldo V. Laroya as the 28th Commandant of the Philippine Coast Guard, following the mandatory retirement of CG Admiral George V. Ursabia Jr effective today, September 8, 2021,” its statement read.
Laroya started his military career in 1993 when he entered the Philippine Military Academy and graduated as member of the “Maringal” Class of 1988.
He served as commander of the Maritime Safety Services Command, Coast Guard Education, Training and Doctrine Command, and Maritime Security and Law Enforcement Command.
He was also district commander of PCG Districts in Western Visayas, Northwestern Luzon, Southwestern Mindanao, and Bicol.
