Na-echapwera! Palace defends P170M cut to RITM’s budget: ‘Napakadami na nating testing centers’

By Prince Golez

Malacañang attributed the cut in the proposed budget to the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) to the increasing number of Covid-19 testing centers in the country.

Under the proposed 2022 budget, the RITM, which was designated as the lone testing center for Covid-19 when the pandemic began early in 2020, will only get P223 million from P393 million this year.

“Pagdating sa testing, hindi lang naman po RITM ang nagti-tests. In fact, napakadami na po nating testing centers. We started with RITM as the lone laboratory but now, we are now doing 70,000 tests a day,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in his virtual presser Monday.

“Ang number of laboratories natin is thousands already if I’m not mistaken. I’m sure there are other reasons behind this,” added Roque.

The secretary noted that a “huge chunk” of the country’s Covid-19 testing efforts is now being undertaken by the private sector.

“Pagdating natin sa testing, we’re now relying almost exclusively—not exclusively naman, but to a very large degree on the private sector,” according to him.
