It’s time for the government task force to include the Filipino youth in the list of vaccine beneficiaries.

Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri has pushed for the vaccination of young Filipinos after welcoming news that local regulators allowed the emergency use of Moderna coronavirus vaccines for children ages 12 to 17.

Moderna is the second coronavirus vaccine to be given approval for use on adolescents. The Food and Drug Administration earlier allowed the use of Pfizer jabs 12 to 15-year-olds.

“I want to thank FDA Chief Eric Domingo for their quick action in giving emergency use approval for the Moderna vaccine on kids aged 12 to 17. We now have Moderna and Pfizer vaccines that we could tap when we start opening up our vaccination program with this age group,” he said.

“My appeal now is for the IATF to allow our Children ages 12-17 to get vaccinated. As a Parent and for all the Parents in our country, we hope they will heed our request,” he said.

Zubiri, a father of three kids, said the Moderna approval could help boost the protection of children from the coronavirus. He said news of kids getting infected with the virus was terrifying.

“It’s been so terrifying, seeing the newer strains of the virus striking more and more children, so this approval is fantastic news,” he said.

“We will be able to have one more layer of protection for our kids, apart from the current health protocols that we are enforcing. Hopefully this move will not just protect our children, but also help us reach herd immunity more quickly,” he said.

At present, the government has prioritized the vaccination of health workers, seniors, people with comorbidity or existing health condition, essential workers, and the indigent population. As of August 31, the Philippines has administered more than 33 million, with 19,469,998 Filipinos receiving the first dose, while 13,836,357 persons are now fully vaccinated. The government’s goal is to vaccinated 50 to 70 million adult Filipinos to reach herd immunity before the end of the year.
