On La Union fiscal’s request: Guevarra: Transfer of Julian Ongpin’s case for ‘fair, impartial’ handling

Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Menardo Guevarra defended his decision to transfer the conduct of the preliminary investigation of the complaint filed against Julian Ongpin, the son of business tycoon Roberto Ongpin.

“The transfer of the preliminary investigation to the DOJ proper was triggered by a request of the regional prosecutor ‘to assure the public and all concerned of a fair and impartial handling of the case’,” he said.

“No comment whatsoever on the handling of the inquest proceedings was made in the request,” he added.

Guevarra has issued an order the transfer the conduct of the preliminary investigation of the complaint against Julian from the La Union Office of the Provincial Prosecutor (OPP) to the Office of the Secretary of Justice Prosecution Staff (OSJPS).

No foul play? Here’s why La Union fiscal’s office ordered release of Bobby Ongpin’s son

Julian, who is being suspected in the death of painter Bree Jonson, is facing a complaint for possession of illegal drugs after 12.6 grams of cocaine were found last Sept. 18 inside the hotel room in San Juan, La Union where he and Jonson had been staying.

Jonson was found unconscious at that time and was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

Following his arrest, Julian was presented for inquest before the OPP which decided to release him and conduct a preliminary investigation over the drug complaint filed by police.
