Former socioeconomic planning Secretary Winnie Monsod is urging Filipinos to bankroll the candidacies of “women leaders” instead of relying on bilyonaryo backers.
Monsod said as much as P16 billion could be collected for the 2022 campaign of select candidates through a crowdfunding campaign.
She said the poorest 5.3 million families could donate P5 over the next eight months, for a total of P26.5 million. Filipinos in higher social income brackets could contribute more, with the amount ranging from P10 to P2,000.
“The potential of around P16 billion can be raised from people of goodwill, from all walks of life. A dream? Maybe. But we must take the first step,” she said in her Sept. 17 column for the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
Monsod said an advantage of having a crowdfunding campaign is having elected leaders “who have no obligation to their dynastic relations, or to big business contributors, but whose ‘utang na loob’ will be to the people whose contributions helped them get elected, with no strings attached.”
The former Cabinet Secretary said a group called AWARE will be in charge of the crowdfunding efforts, though she gave a BPI account under her and journalist Cheche Lazaro’s name for donations.
“And, initially, the money raised will go to women leaders who are qualified, competent, with no dynastic baggage and no whiff of corruption. The project is called LetWomenLead,” she said.
