Poe laments centenarians dying w/o receiving cash gifts

Senator Grace Poe on Sunday lamented the country’s “centenarian lolos and lolas passing away without receiving their cash gift,” saying the situation “is beyond bearing.”

“In distributing the benefits under the Centenarians Act, the government should consider reviewing its processes to make them less cumbersome and more accommodating to the elderly, who are naturally constrained by age and resources,” the chair of the Senate public services committee said.

She said the Department of Social Welfare and Development must also constantly coordinate with local government units to keep an updated list of persons nearing their 100th year to ensure availability of funds for claims.

“The law pays homage to the life and longevity of our beloved centenarians amid the deaths besetting our country due to the pandemic,” Poe said.

“We must honor them for striving to remain as pillars of their families and source of wisdom of our communities,” she said.
