Bullying is not OK.
Former government adviser Dr. Tony Leachon is taking a stand against the bullying antics of a foul-mouthed Cabinet member against a group of doctors.
Leachon broke the news that physician leaders endured “verbal abuse” from a Cabinet official during a recent meeting of the government task force in charge of containing the COVID-19 outbreak.
The health reform advocate did not name the concerned Cabinet official but the Philippine Daily Inquirer has tagged Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque who supposedly berated the doctors for opposing the government’s plan to relax the lockdown rules in Metro Manila. In a fit of anger caught on camera, Roque scolded the doctors for supposedly not appreciating the government’s pandemic response.
Leachon, in a series of tweets, denounced the Cabinet member for bullying the doctors during the meeting. He said the “barumbado” official should apologize for such rude behavior.
The Manila-based doctor decided to stand up to the bully and encouraged others, especially the members of the IATF, to defend the country’s doctors.
“Kaya nang marinig ko mismo sa mga “physician leaders”na MINURA sila ng barumbadong miyembro ng GABINETE sa IATF, HINDI AKO PAPAYAG PAAPI KAHIT AYAW NILANG MAGSALITA. Di ko masabi ang detalye. But the IATF members present during that meeting should defend our poor doctors!” Leachon tweeted on Sept. 10, 2021.
“Media should ask Palace for the details of this sad IATF incident when revered physician leaders were bullied by a ranking cabinet official in an attempt to represent the plight of our healthcare workers. Some people will disrespect you and treat you bad. Time to speak up,” he said.
Leachon made the comment after 10 volunteer doctors resigned from the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) due to reported exhaustion from work amid COVID-19 surge in the country. PGH admitted that the resignation of the doctors was a huge loss for the COVID-19 referral facility.
