President Duterte and his political party are drawing flak for convening a huge assembly in preparation for the 2022 elections while the nation endures a prolonged pandemic lockdown.
Comedian Ogie Diaz has slammed the PDP-Laban assembly attended by the President and his party mates in Pampanga despite the last-minute quarantine policy flip-flop by the government. He criticized the mass gathering of Duterte and his political allies while businesses such as restaurants and salons are still forced to limit operations and daily wage earners remain jobless during the lockdown.
The government originally wanted to ease the movement controls in Metro Manila this week but suddenly changed its mind on the eve of the implementation of the general community quarantine (GCQ). Metro Manila has been retained under modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) that limits capacity of businesses and public transportation to quell the coronavirus spread. Pampanga, venue of the party assembly, is under more relaxed modified general community quarantine.
Diaz, in a Facebook post, said many businesses started to prepare for the reopening of their operations when the government task force initially announced the imminent GCQ implementation. Such preparations however were cut short after the Inter-Agency Task Force on the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF) made a sudden turnaround and decided to keep the capital region under MECQ until mid-September.
“Naudlot ang opening ng resto at salon at iba pang negosyo dahil sa napakagulong desisyon sa klase ng lockdown, pero nag-meeting ang PDP-Laban na may 400 members sa isang convention center, okay lang? So sila, pwede? Ang mga negosyo, bawal? Ang mga manggagawang excited magtrabaho, nganga?” Diaz said.
The President and his allies got a stinging rebuke from Diaz for prioritizing the 2022 elections over the pandemic response. The administration has been widely criticized for its alleged bungled efforts to contain the COVID-19 outbreak, that left more than 2 million people infected and more than 34,000 dead.
“Di bale sana kung itong mga pulitikong ito ang nagbibigay ng kabuhayan sa bawat pamilya eh. Kaso ang pinaghahandaan nila ay yung eleksyon next year, kaya nagtipon-tipon. Mas priority ba yan over pandemya?” Diaz asked.
Diaz said the public should expect the “positive” news following the mass gathering held by the President and his loyal followers in the middle of the pandemic. Mass gatherings except those related to government services and humanitarian missions are prohibited during the COVID-19 lockdown.
“So abangan na lamang natin ang mga ‘positive’ news sa mga susunod na araw,” Diaz said.
