‘Wag idaan sa gimik! Comelec urged to ban celebrities, performances in 2022 campaign rallies

By Billy Begas

A lawmaker has urged the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to prohibit celebrities and intermission numbers during campaign rallies to prevent unnecessary gathering of people that may result to COVID-19 surge.

House Deputy Majority Leader and Iloilo Rep. Lorenz Defensor pointed out that mostly intermission numbers and invited celebrities were not part or connected to the platform of government of the candidates.

“Pag dumating na po kasi si Coco Martin siguro po ang maximum na 10% ng venue may daan at daan po dyan so baka pwede malagay natin sa guidelines na the intermission numbers, yung mga papremyo ng candy o mga pasayaw ng mga kandidato, pagkanta, personalities na hindi naman po kailangan sa kanilang platform baka pwede pong i-avoid nalang natin yun…,” Defensor said during the hearing of the House Committee on Suffrage and Electoral Reforms last Thursday.

Comelec Commissioner Antonio Kho said the agency would consider the suggestions of the lawmakers.

“Especially yung suggestion na, to avoid getting yung ating mga singers or those who belong to entertainment industry kung ma-avoid natin yun, we will avoid them. We will try to include them in our manual,” Kho said.

Kho said the guidelines is a “work in progress” and will adjust depending on the situation.

“Kasi itong manual guidelines lang ho ito as of today, as of this few days, as of this month. So papalit at papalit pa rin po ito depende na rin sa situation on the ground,” Kho added.

He said Comelec is also welcoming suggestions and comments.
