‘Wag na pabebe! Duterte’s political adviser tells Sara: Declare presidential bid now

Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte Carpio should declare her intention to run for president in the 2022 elections and not wait for President Rodrigo Duterte to withdraw his plan to run in the vice presidential race.

Presidential Adviser for Political Affairs Secretary Jacinto Paras said in the hierarchy of values “the need of the country and the clamor of the people for the best leader possible, takes precedence over any family commitment that only one Duterte can run for national office.”

“If you go into politics, your service is to the nation, to your people,” said Paras, a three-term congressman of Negros Oriental.

He added: “what comes first is God, country, then family.”

Citing survey results, Paras said it is clear that the people want a leader who can continue the good projects of her predecessor and lead the country to recovery.

“One cannot choose the niceties of a family agreement over this higher calling,” Paras added. “I understand where Mayor Sara is coming from: may usapan na sila ng Pangulo…but that’s within the family…. When there is a clear clamor for you to serve in a higher office, you have no choice. That should be the only basis for your decision.”

Paras expressed the belief that Duterte will reconsider his vice presidential bid if he sees that the country will be in good hands.

“He will possibly withdraw on his own, and let Mayor Duterte pick her own running mate for next year’s polls,” he added. “But I’m being frank because I know the President. He is just concerned about the country’s future, and the legacy he will leave especially when it comes to his unfinished programs. Once he sees his daughter is serious about leading the country, he may have a change of mindset.”

Last week, Carpio said that she will seek reelection in 2022 after her father accepted his nomination as vice presidential candidate of PDP-Laban.

Despiter this announcement, the citizens movement Hugpong Para kay Sara (HPS) said that more people are continuously joining their call for Carpio to run.
