Duterte says he can be a Communist Party member anytime: Drop your weapons first

President Rodrigo Duterte on Saturday said he can be a member of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) provided that they agree to surrender their weapons.

Duterte made the statement during the oath-taking of new members and proclamation of local candidates of the PDP-Laban held in Iligan City, Lanao del Norte.

“I agree, I can be a Communist Party member anytime except that you have to drop your weapons,” the country’s chief executive said.

The President said the CPP must abandon its armed struggle in pursuit of the country’s peace agenda.

“Don’t engage in armed struggle. Armed struggle should never take place. So that’s it,” he added.

In 2019, Duterte announced that the government officially ended its peace negotiations with communist rebels, citing their continued attacks on state troops and civilians.
