As the 2022 election nears, rumors are rife that PDP-Laban Secretary General Melvin Matibag will be the next chief of the Commission on Elections (Comelec).
The top post in the poll body will be vacant by February 2022 with the retirement of Comelec chairman Sheriff Abas. Also stepping down three months before the presidential polls are Comelec Commissioners Rowena Guanzon and Antonio Kho Jr.
There are talks that President Rodrigo Duterte will appoint Matibag to the Comelec, and he will likely be named the chairman.
At present, six out of seven Comelec commissioners have been appointed by Duterte. Abas, who was named commissioner by the late former President Benigno Aquino III in 2015, became chairman of the poll body in 2017.
Duterte’s appointments to the poll body will be closely watched, especially since the races for national positions– from president to senator– are expected to be tight.
