Former Vice President Jojo Binay is still dismayed with the government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Instead of spending more on improving the country’s health care system to guard against the pandemic, Binay said the government would rather focus on roads and the Manila dolomite beach. He told the government to straighten its priorities.
“This should be the time to strengthen our public health system as a defense against any future surge in COVID cases, or future pandemics,” Binay said on Facebook.
“But instead, government would rather spend more money on roads and the Domolite beach than hospitals, medicines, and benefits for health workers. It’s about time we rethink our priorities,” he said.
Binay, who is running for senator in the 2022 elections, has been critical of the government’s poor efforts to contain the spread of the coronavirus in the country.
When the government further eased the movement restrictions in Metro Manila, he appealed for caution as more Filipinos are still not yet fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
“Dapat mahinahon. Dapat paghandaan at dapat sigurado. It is better to be cautious now, than sorry later,” he said.
While there are more people vaccinated now than last year, he said vaccine hesitancy and lack of access to such jabs remains high outside Metro Manila.
“And while cases are going down in NCR and key areas, hospitals are saying they are not feeling the downtrend, especially in the provinces. The situation is aggravated by the continuing departure of nurses and health workers,” he said.
