‘Itaga niyo sa bato…:’ Sara Duterte fuels speculation on substitution in message to supporters

Is Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte planning to enter the presidential race as a substitute candidate by November 15?

Duterte fueled fevered speculation about her political plans Saturday (October 9) as she addressed supporters dismayed by her decision to seek reelection instead of the presidency. The mayor mentioned the word “rock” in expressing her gratitude.

“Isa pong malaking karangalan sa akin ang matinding suporta na ipinakita at patuloy na ipinapakita niyo, kahit di pa tayo lahat ay magkakilala. Napakaasarap isipin na nandiyan kayo, solid ang suporta at pagmamahal, saan mang puwesto, kahit anong panahon,” she said.

“Itaga niyo sa batong hindi ko ito makakalimutan,” Duterte added.

In a shocking move, the PDP-Laban on Friday (October 8) fielded Senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa as its presidential candidate on the last day of filing certificates of candidacy.

Dela Rosa, however, is widely seen as a placeholder as political parties are allowed to substitute candidates until November 15 provided that the new aspirant belongs to the same party.

Duterte is the chairperson of Hugpong ng Pagbabago, a regional party.

Asked if he is a placeholder for Duterte, Dela Rosa answered, “Eh di, mas maganda.”

Duterte has filed a COC as mayor of Davao City. She is seeking a third term.
