Kumbinsihin ni Cusi: Duterte urged to certify bill regulating oil industry as urgent

By Billy Begas

House Deputy Minority Leader and Bayan Muna Rep. Carlos Isagani Zarate on Sunday challenged Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi to ask and convince President Rodrigo Duterte to certify as urgent the measure regulating the downstream oil industry.

Zarate made the dare after Cusi wrote a letter to Congress appealing to pass a law that will unbundle the prices of petroleum products sold in refilling stations and amend the Oil Deregulation law.

“Di uubra na magpabida ngayon si Sec. Cusi samantalang ilang taon na ang House Bill 4711 sa Kongreso pero di naman niya itinulak at ang unbundling naman ay sa Congress din nanggaling nung malantad na walang ginagawa ang DOE para alamin kung nag-o-overprice nga ang mga oil companies,” Zarate said.

House Bill 4711 was filed by the Makabayan bloc in 2019 seeking to unbundle the prices of petroleum product making it easy to determine if there is overpricing.

Zarate also expressed hope that Congress will not hear the proposal since Cusi endorsed it.

Oil companies are expecting another round of increase in prices of gasoline, diesel and kerosene this week, the ninth consecutive increase.

“Since the start of 2021, diesel has seen a net increase of P18 a liter…. Gasoline also saw a net increase of P19.70 a liter since the start of the year… This is too much especially since many consumers are now jobless and others are under employed,” Zarate pointed out.
