There is still “some hope” that Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte Carpio may be persuaded to seek the presidency after a long talk with PDP-Laban standard bearer Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa.
Dela Rosa met with the mayor at the Davao City office last Monday as the substitution deadline for the 2022 elections draws near.
In the meeting, the former police chief said he discussed Mayor Sara’s huge chances in winning the presidential elections after she remained the frontrunner in recent pre-election surveys.
“She was very receptive to my advice and we had a lengthy, we had a serious conversation. In the end, I saw some hope along the horizon,” Dela Rosa said during an interview over “PolitiSkoop” program hosted by Ina Andalong and Michael Fajatin on Wednesday.
Dela Rosa said his ideal scenario would be Mayor Sara running for president either under PDP-Laban or Lakas CMD-party.
He said the mayor can take his place as PDP-Laban standard bearer after taking her oath as member of the ruling party. Another option will be Mayor Sara tapped as a substitute presidential candidate either under the Lakas-CMD party, Dela Rosa said.
“She has my unqualified support pagdating sa, kung mag-decide siya tumakbo,” he said.
“‘Yung eagle of the south puwedeng pumatong sa bato para mag takeoff,” he added.
The President’s daughter earlier decided to seek reelection as Davao City mayor for the third and final term despite mounting calls from supporters to join the presidential race.
Political parties have until mid-November to field substitute candidates for the 2022 national and local elections.
