Mere placeholder? Pangilinan admits he’s Robredo’s last minute VP pick amid speculation of Tito Sotto poaching

Senator Francis Pangilinan admitted that Vice President Leni Robredo asked him to be her running mate at the last minute as rumors persist that the Liberal Party is eyeing another politiko to support for vice president.

Pangilinan told reporters Friday (October 8) that he had been planning to run for reelection but “call of duty” made him agree to become LP’s vice presidential candidate.

“Kung may pagkakataong makatulong sa mas marami, kung may pagkakataong maglingkod sa mas malawak na paraan, kung tatawagin sa mataas na katungkulan, tungkulin nating tumugon lalo na sa gitna ng pinakamatinding krisis sa kalusugan at ekonomiya ng bansa,” he said shortly after filing his certificate of candidacy.

Recalling his discussion with wife, Sharon Cuneta, about the sudden decision to run for vice president, Pangilinan recalled: “Hindi madaling baguhin ang mga plano ng last minute. Ipinagdasal naman namin nang taimtim ang linaw ng puso at pag-iisip. Mabigat na desisyon ito para sa akin at sa aking pamilya.”

Robredo was vocal about her efforts to unify the opposition before declaring her presidential bid on October 7. She met with Senators Vicente Sotto III and Panfilo Lacson as late as October 2, fueling speculation that she’s trying to break up their tandem to come up with a unified ticket.

Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon, a vice chairman of LP, confirmed the meeting and said “no agreement was reached.”
