UNIDO Party set to make a comeback for 2022 polls

MANILA – A once powerful political entity that was responsible in toppling the two-decade Marcos regime is reportedly making a comeback in next year’s elections.

Politiko learned from insiders in the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) that the poll body has recently granted the accreditation and application for reactivation of the United Nationalist Democratic Organization or more popularly known as UNIDO during the early and mid-1980s.

The poll body has reportedly accredited UNIDO as a regional political entity, similar to Mayor Sara Duterte’s Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP) in Davao Region, and expected to field candidates in the local and provincial levels respectively in the vote-rich Region 4-A—the provinces of Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon (CALABARZON).

As of 2019, the entire CALABARZON reportedly has 8,674,351 voters, as per COMELEC.

UNIDO is currently being headed by one of the kin of the Laurel clan of Batangas, according to Politiko’s reliable source.

UNIDO was originally a multi-party electoral alliance founded in 1980 by former assemblyman and later Vice President Salvador “Doy” Laurel and other prominent opposition personalities that contributed to the fall of the Marcos Dictatorship.

During the 1986 snap elections, UNIDO fielded the widow of assassinated former Sen. Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., Corazon Aquino against the ailing Ferdinand Marcos who ruled the country for more than 20 years. Laurel later became Mrs. Aquino’s running mate.

UNIDO played a major role in the 1986 EDSA Revolt that led to the rise of Aquino and Laurel to power.

The party was dissolved right after the 1987 legislative and local elections as several leaders of UNIDO either formed their own respective political entities or parted ways with the Aquino government, just like the Laurel. (JCC)
