What’s next for Rodrigo Duterte?

By Prince Golez

President Rodrigo Duterte will use the remainder of his term boosting the country’s recovery from the impacts of Covid-19, his spokesman said.

In a statement Saturday, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said Duterte dropped his ambition to become vice president, submitting to the “will of the people.”

Roque cited the latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) poll, which revealed that the president’s vice-presidential run in the 2022 national elections “violates the intention of the Constitution.”

“President Rodrigo Roa Duterte has clearly spoken: He will no longer aspire for the second highest post in the land, bowing to the will of the people, as reflected in the June 2021 SWS survey which showed contrary opinion for PRRD’s running for the Vice Presidency,” the secretary said.

“The Chief Executive would spend the remainder of his term guiding the country towards post-COVID-19 recovery,” he added.

Roque said Duterte would also “pro-actively” campaign for his party mates in the PDP-Laban “to ensure the legacy of his programs and projects and the continuity of his reform initiatives,” and ensure that the upcoming election is free, honest and peaceful.
