Senator Bong Go, accompanied by President Rodrigo Duterte, caused a sensation on the second day of the period of filing of candidacies on Saturday when he announced he was seeking the vice presidency instead of the presidency in the 2022 elections.

Duterte, on the other hand, said he was heeding the people’s call and retiring from politics after his term as president.

The twin moves shocked some political observers and raised questions on social media: Who will be Go’s running mate in the Duterte wing of the PDP-Laban?

Some commentators quickly pointed to either Duterte’s daughter, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte or former Senator Bongbong Marcos, currently in No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, on pre-election surveys.

The PDP-Laban’s Duterte wing did not immediately answer questions on who will be its standard bearer.

Earlier, it endorsed a Go-Duterte tandem. The faction of Senators Manny Pacquiao and Koko Pimentel claimed months ago that Duterte’s VP run was only a smokescreen for their real candidate: Sara Duterte.

In his speech, Go said he was taking on the challenge of seeking the VP post after Duterte withdrew his nomination as PDP-Laban’s vice presidential bet.

“Given that President Rodrigo Duterte decided to withdraw his acceptance of nomination, I am here to take on the challenge as PDP-Laban’s Vice Presidential candidate,” he said.

“Napag-desisyunan kong tumakbo bilang Bise Presidente sa darating na halalan upang maipagpatuloy ang mga magagandang programa at tunay na pagbabagong naumpisahan ni Pangulong Duterte — at sisikapin nating dagdagan pa ang mga ito,” Go said.

“Una sa lahat, walang tigil dapat ang kampanya natin kontra iligal na droga, korapsyon, at kriminalidad. Ang taumbayan na ang humusga kung mas ligtas ba ngayon ang mga anak nila at walang pangamba dahil sa mga kriminal at adik,” he said.

“Para sa aking mga kapartido sa PDP-Laban at sa iba pang lubos na sumusuporta sa mga adhikain ng administrasyong ito, huwag kayong mag-alala dahil hindi namin kayo pababayaan. Nandirito pa rin po si Pangulong Duterte bilang ating pinuno at number 1 campaigner. Wala pong iwanan sa laban na ito!” Go said.

“Tulad ng bilin ni Pangulong Duterte sa akin, parati po at tinatandaan ko ito: ‘unahin mo ang kapakanan ng mga Pilipino at mahalin natin ang ating kapwa, hinding-hindi ka magkakamali,’” he said.
