‘Heto na naman tayo’: Leachon frowns on return of face shield rule

Face shields again?

Former government adviser Dr. Tony Leachon is dismayed that the government is mulling on requiring anew Filipinos to wear face shields.

Leachon, in a post on Twitter, said it would be a “huge letdown” for Filipinos if the face shield mandate is reimposed without the government squarely addressing the threat from the new COVID-19 variant Omicron.

“Face shields have been linked to the Pharmally alleged anomalous. To reintroduce the idea of wearing face shields without fully addressing the huge threat of the Omicron variant is clearly a huge letdown for many of Filipinos. Heto na naman tayo,” Leachon tweeted.

Another tweet showed Leachon’s disappointment about the face shield use discussion in the country while the rest of world is concerned about the Omicron variant.

“High level discussion sa buong Mundo sa Omicron variant. Tayo sa PH hanggang ngayon usaping face shield pa rin. Walang sawa,” he said.

The government relaxed the mandatory use of face shields since Nov. 15 in places with low coronavirus risk. Only people in areas classified as Alert Level 5 or are under granular lockdowns are required to wear face shields. But the government is now eyeing the return of face shield mandate amid concerns about the Omicron variant.

Instead of the mandatory face shield use, Leachon pushed anew for tighter border controls and intensified vaccination drive to address the COVID threat.

“Entry of highly transmissible Variants are acutely managed by travel bans and border control and not by face shields. Rapid vaccination program with booster should the be the centrality of focus for the long haul to protect the people with accepted and proven protective gear,” he said.
