Legal battle ain’t over: DOJ to appeal dismissal of drug raps vs Julian Ongpin

The Department of Justice (DOJ) is set to file an appeal in the dismissal of the drug case against Julian Ongpin, the son of billionaire Roberto Ongpin.

Prosecutor General Benedicto Malcontento made the assurance after Judge Romeo Agacito of San Fernando City, La Union issued on Monday (Nov. 15) an order that dismissed the drug case against Ongpin.

“The panel will file Motion for Reconsideration,” Malcontento said.

In his order, the judge “the evidence on record readily manifests blatant non-compliance with the chain of custody rule.”

Ongpin was arrested after police found 12.6 grams of cocaine last Sept. 18 in the room of a resort room where he and late Filipina painter Bree Jonson stayed in San Juan, La Union.

He has insisted that the drugs did not belong to him and were not in his possession when found by police in a pouch belonging to Jonson.

Meanwhile, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) continues to investigate Ongpin’s possible involvement in Jonson’s death.
