MILF to still lead new set of BTA members: Palace

By Prince Golez

MalacaƱang on Tuesday assured that majority of the new 80-member Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA) will still be dominated by the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

On October 28, President Rodrigo Duterte signed Republic Act No. 11593 extending the transition period of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao and postponing the the first regular elections in the region.

The new law also authorizes Duterte to appoint 80 individuals as members of the transition team after the term of the incumbent BTA members expires on June 30, 2022.

“Ang appointment po talaga ng 80-man BARMM members is according to the law passed by Congress to be made by the President,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said during a televised briefing.

“Antayin na lang natin ang desisyon ng Presidente. Pero siyempre hindi naman po pupuwedeng sabihin na balewala ang magiging boses ng MILF. Sigurado naman ako mayorya ng ma-a-appoint ng Presidente ay manggagaling pa rin sa hanay ng MILF. Bagamat meron din po yang appointees ang ating gobyerno,” added Roque.

The BTA, which governs the BARMM that replaced the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, is currently headed by MILF chief Al Haj Murad Ebrahim.
