Not leaving Duterte for Isko: Vince Dizon appointed new adviser on pandemic response

The country’s testing czar Vince Dizon has been promoted to a new government post.

President Duterte appointed Dizon as his new adviser on COVID response, squelching speculations he was leaving government to support a rival presidential bet in the 2022 elections. The Palace announced the appointment of Dizon and released photos of his oath-taking before the President.

The appointment of Dizon came a month after he resigned as president and chief executive officer of the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA). Prior to his new post, he served as the deputy chief implementer of the National Task Force Against COVID-19 as well as dubbed the head of the government’s COVID testing efforts. Before the pandemic hit last year, Dizon worked as Presidential Adviser for Flagship Programs and Projects.

Dizon was recently rumored to be planning to join the campaign team of Manila Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso. The mayor is running for president in next year’s elections.

Dizon’s appointment comes amid criticisms hurled at the government’s alleged poor efforts to mitigate the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. As of Nov. 27, the country recorded more than 2.8 million COVID cases, including 17,853 cases and 48,017 deaths.
