Roque mourns passing of wartime rape victim Vinuya, vows to continue seeking justice for Malaya Lolas

By Prince Golez

Former presidential spokesperson and senatorial candidate Harry Roque condoled with the family of Isabelita Vinuya, president of the Malaya Lolas, an organization composed of former “comfort women” during the Japanese occupation, who passed away Wednesday.

Roque lawyered for the group when in their case before the Supreme Court to compel the Philippine government to espouse, or sponsor, their claims for compensation from the Japanese government.

“Nakikiramay po kami sa pamilya ni Lola Isabelita Vinuya at sa kanyang mga naulila sa organisasyon ng ‘Malaya Lolas’,” the human rights lawyer said in a post on Facebook.

He also apologized that Vinuya and other Lolas died without getting justice and receiving reparation.

“We did not win that case, Lola Isabelita, and you and your group are now a textbook case in Philippine jurisprudence. I am sorry that despite our efforts, you and many other Malaya Lolas died without receiving reparation,” said Roque.

“Reparation is not just a recognition that you are victims of one of the worst war crimes, sexual slavery during World War II, but also a restoration of the status quo ante, including payment of compensation. We will continue this advocacy,” the ex-Palace official added.
