House forms contingent to discuss extra benefits for solo parents

The House of Representatives has elected its members who will discuss with the Senate contingent the proposal to give additional benefits to solo parents.

The conferees are House Committee on Revision of Laws chairperson and Zambales Rep. Cheryl Deloso-Montalla, House Committee on Welfare of Chlldren chairperson and Tingog party-list Rep. Yedda Marie Romualdez, Laguna Rep. Sol Aragones, Deputy Speaker and Antique Rep. Loren Legarda, Agusan del Norte Rep. Lawrence Fortun and Gabriela Rep. Arlene Brosas.

Under House Bill 8097, a solo parent will be given a seven-day parental leave with pay every year.

The bill also mandates the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), Commission on Higher Education (CHED), Department of Education (DepEd), Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and other related government agencies to prioritize solo parents and their children in the provision of livelihood, training and poverty alleviation programs.

Solo parents will also be given a 10% discount and exemption from the Value Added Tax (VAT) on the sale of selected goods including milk, supplements, and sanitary diapers.

Establishments may claim the discounts granted to solo parents as tax deductions.

Private companies with at least 10 qualified solo parents will be given an additional deduction from their gross income equivalent to 15% of the total amount paid as salaries and wages to qualified solo parents.
