Need ba i-redesign? 1,000-peso bill with three PH heroes won’t be demonetized: Palace

By Prince Golez

Malacañang has assured that the P1,000-peso bill featuring the three World War II-era Filipino heroes would remain in circulation.

Acting presidential spokesperson Karlo Nograles issued the comment after the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) released a new design for the P1,000-denominated banknote showing a Philippine eagle.

“Hindi po ma-demonetize ang ating P1,000 bills featuring our three national heroes and martyrs. Ito lamang ay iyong featuring iyong Philippine eagle ay for test circulation lamang po to test the polymer material,” Nograles said during his televised briefing Tuesday.

Citing the central bank, the Palace executive said the new polymer bills, which will be released in April 2022, are more hygienic, environmentally friendly and durable.

“Ito po ay test circulation lamang na if the timeline is correct, it will be done, according to BSP, on April 2022. So, kabilang iyan ng test circulation para nga to validate the polymer material kung ito ay environmentally friendly, kung ito ba ay more hygienic especially in light of this Covid-19 pandemic that we are still currently facing, and if it is more secure,” he explained.

The plan to shift to polymer bills has met opposition from various groups. Several lawmakers have called the removal of the images of Vicente Lim, Josefa Llanes Escoda and Jose Abad Santos from banknotes as a form of historical revisionism.
