Para patas ang laban! Leody de Guzman asks Comelec to ban commercial political ads

By Prince Golez

Labor leader and presidential aspirant Ka Leody de Guzman has welcomed the recent decision by Google to ban election-related advertisements on its platforms in the Philippines. The policy will run from February 8 up to Election Day on May 9.

“We openly welcome the decision by Google,” de Guzman said in a statement.

The Partido Lakas ng Masa candidate also called on the Commission on Election (Comelec) to ban all commercial political ads for the upcoming 2022 elections.

“We call on Comelec to ban commercial political ads,” he said.

“Government must assume responsibility for voter education and the raising of their political maturity. Moneyed candidates, representing the billionaires, are exploiting the absence of a law against premature campaigning,” according to him.

De Guzman stressed the need to have a “level playing field” to give each candidate a fair chance in the elections.

“Remove the financial advantage of the elitist candidates. The interest of the people should enjoy primacy over the personal ambition of crooked politicians and political dynasties,” he also said.

“Institute electoral reforms such as the strengthening of the party system, prohibition against turncoatism, and the responsibility of the state to increase voter awareness on candidates and their platforms,” the presidential bet added.

De Guzman is running for the country’s top office alongside former Akbayan congressman and vice presidential aspirant Walden Bello.
