The government must spend, not hoard, the funds to provide relief and rehabilitation to the victims of typhoon Odette, according to a senatorial contender.
Doctor Minguita Padilla said hoarding funds for the elections instead of typhoon relief would be “the height of insensitivity and depravity.”
Padilla made the appeal after typhoon Odette displaced thousands of families and left more than 150 people dead and 37 still missing when it tore across the Visayas and Mindanao last week.
President Duterte earlier claimed the government had dwindling funds after its efforts to address the pandemic. The outgoing leader later promised to set aside billions for the rebuilding efforts in the Odette-ravaged places.
“Government has money to aid the victims of odette. Even allies like Cong. Joey Salceda say so,” Padilla tweeted.
“This is no time to hoard funds, in order to use in the coming elections, while millions of desperate Filipinos suffer. To do so would be the height of insensitivity and depravity,” she said.
