2014 pa nagparenew, ‘di inaksyunan! Even Robredo thinks Aquino-Belmonte Congress to blame for sitting on ABS-CBN franchise

Vice President Leni Robredo believes the House of Representatives had more than enough time to tackle the franchise renewal of ABS-CBN Corp. which has been pending since 2014 when then President Noy Aquino and Speaker Sonny Belmonte were in control. Robredo is a political ally of Aquino.

“Hindi inaksyunan, eh. Tingin ko hindi—hindi dahilan iyong… hindi dahilan iyong walang oras kasi 2014 panagsimula, long before matapos iyong—mag-expire iyong lisensiya,” said Robredo in an interview with RMN’s Ely Saludar.

“Ilan na? Anim na taon na. Dalawang taon sa past administration, apat na taon sa administrasyon na ito. So bakit sasabihin na walang panahon para pag-usapan, o kulang ng panahon? Kasi kung gugustuhin, puwede naman, eh,” she added.

ABS-CBN said it opted for an “early renewal application” in 2014. Then Isabela Rep. Giorgidi Aggabao filed House Bill 4997 under the 16th Congress but this failed to hurdle the committee led by then Marikina Rep. Marcy Teodoro. ABS-CBN withdrew its application before the end of 16th Congress due to “time constraints.”

Despite being on the same side in 2010, Aquino resented what he felt were unwarranted criticisms from ABS-CBN’s top anchors, Noli De Castro and Ted Failon. Former Cabinet Secretary Bobi Tiglao claimed that Aquino and Lopez never spoke after the then President gave de Castro and other ABS-CBN reporters a tongue-lashing during the network’s 25th anniversary in 2012.

ABS-CBN’s franchise endured more snubbing in the 17th and 18th Congress as President Rodrigo Duterte openly pushed to block ABS-CBN’s franchise and Palawan Rep. Franz Alvarez, who is chair of the franchise committee since 2016, refused to hear ABS-CBN’s franchise renewal in the last four years. When Speaker Alan Cayetano took over in 2019, the House blockade against ABS-CBN’s franchise hardened further.

For Robredo, Congress should have at least given ABS-CBN the opportunity to make its case for renewal before its franchise expired on May 2020.
