Has corruption managed to out-mutate the coronavirus, at least in the Philippines?
Sen. Panfilo Lacson raised this point Thursday amid reports of grossly overpriced personal protective equipment (PPEs) and test kits to be used in the fight against COVID-19.
“Reports of grossly overpriced PPEs and test kits might be an indication that corruption mutates at a much deadlier pace than the coronavirus,” Lacson said in a post on his Twitter account.

“If the President’s oft-repeated threats in this regard continue to be ignored, hubris must be the order of the day for some officials,” he added.
Earlier, Lacson had also warned against “KUPIT-19,” or possible corruption in the distribution of social amelioration program funds to families affected by COVID-triggered lockdowns.
In past weeks, several reports indicated the government may have shelled out P20 billion for three million PPE sets.
Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr., chief implementer of the national government response against COVID-19, claimed the P20 billion will actually be used to procure 11 million PPE sets.
