Kris Aquino might have influenced her brother, former President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, to sit on ABS-CBN’s franchise renewal bid, which started when the family was still in power.
Former Cabinet Secretary Rigoberto “Bobi” Tiglao said in his Manila Times column Monday (May 11) that ABS-CBN’s cold response to Kris’ alleged demands might have prompted her to dissuade her brother from renewing ABS-CBN’s franchise.
A bill renewing ABS-CBN’s franchise for another 25 years was filed in 2014, when Noynoy was still in power, but it wasn’t acted on by the House of Representatives until he left office in 2016.
Citing a source, Tiglao said Kris wanted to be paid P1 million per show at ABS-CBN, or double her existing fee at the time.
“She was asking for the moon and the stars for a new contract, but ABS called her bluff when she took a leave for two weeks. Her ratings were going down and ABS has a deep bench of replacements — Anne Curtis, Vice Ganda, Angel Locsin and Cristine Reyes, among others,” Tiglao quoted the source as saying about Kris.
“Do you think Kris over some dinner with her kuya might not have remarked ‘how bad naman’ ABS was being to her?” the source reportedly said.
Tiglao said Noynoy could’ve rushed ABS-CBN’s franchise renewal if he wanted to since the House readily obeyed his order to impeach then-Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez and then-Chief Justice Renato Corona.
However, ABS-CBN’s franchise application was left in limbo because, among others, Noynoy was also angry about the network’s negative coverage of the scandals that happened during his administration.
