Hindi minamaliit! Karen Davila apologizes to Pacquiao for interview on lack of college degree

Karen Davila has apologized to Senator Manny Pacquiao for grilling him last year over his college studies, which countless netizens found to be condescending.

Davila apologized to Pacquiao on air during their interview on ANC’s “Headstart” Tthursday (May 7). She said she didn’t intend to come across as belitting the senator.

“This is my personal effort to let you know, there was a bit of a misunderstanding noong pinag-usapan natin na nagtatapos kayo ng kolehiyo. I wanna take this opportunity kasi marami pa rin po who did misunderstand and feel na I was condescending toward you,” Davila said.

“[K]ung meron pong ganoon na nakarating sa inyo, I want to let you know, senator, it was never my intention as an interviewer and as a journalist,” she added.

Appearing on “Headstart” on February 19, 2019, Davila asked Pacquiao if he was in favor of making a college degree required for politikos running for senators and president, to which the boxing champ said yes.

Davila then pointed out that Pacquiao wouldn’t be qualified as senator or president if a college degree was necessary.

At that point, Pacquiao revealed he’s on the way to finishing a college degree.

“Nag-aaral naman ako,” he said. Davila followed up, “College degree?”

Pacquiao said he was on the way to graduating from college but refused to disclose the name of his school.

“Anong eskwelahan?” Davila asked, to which Pacquiao replied, “Eskwelahan? Dito lang.”

“Saan yun?” Davila pressed. Pacquiao said: “Dito sa Maynila.”

Asking the senator again, Davila said: “Malaking istorya yun, anong pangalan ng eskwelahan?”

Pacquiao replied, “Ibubulong ko na lang sa ‘yo mamaya.”

In their latest interview, Pacquiao thanked Davila for clarifying the issue and said he doesn’t hold a grudge against her.

“’Di ako nasaktan diyan. Wala sa isip ko ‘yun dahil totoo naman, nag-aaral ako noong time na ‘yun,” he said.

Pacquiao said he didn’t want to disclose his school’s name lest people think he was bragging about it.

“‘Di ko pwedeng i-announce ‘yung school na pinapasukan kasi baka sabihin nila, nagyabang na naman ito. Pinapakita ko na lang na malapit na akong mag-graduate sa pag-aaral ko for how many years na yung informal study ko, matagal din yun. Sa wakas natapos din,” he said.
