Palace denies Calida pressured NTC to order ABS-CBN closure: ‘Di nadidiktahan si Cordoba

By Prince Golez

Solicitor General Jose Calida did not pressure the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) prohibited ABS-CBN from continuing its broadcast operations after its legislative franchise expired on May 4, Malacañang said.

“Tapatan, hindi po nag influence si Calida. Sumulat po siya, that’s in due course of his job, he is perfectly within his right to write,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said Wednesday.

During an interview aired on government-owned PTV-4, Roque said that NTC is an independent telecommunications regulator, exercising quasi-judicial power.

“Ang chairman ng NTC ilang presidente na po ang pinagsilbihan niya. Wala pong pupwedeng magsasabi na nadidiktahan si Chairman [Gamaliel] Cordoba. Tingin ko naman sa tagal ng panahon na nandiyan siya, walang makapagsasabi na nadidiktahan si Chairman Cordoba,” he added.

The NTC ordered ABS-CBN yesterday to stop its operations after its 25-year congressional franchise expired on May 4.

The network should halt the operations of its TV and radio broadcasting stations nationwide “absent a valid congressional franchise as required by law,” the Commission said
