Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro “Teddyboy” Locsin Jr. dragged House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano through the mud Wednesday (May 6) after ABS-CBN shut down following the expiration of its franchise.
Locsin, former representative of Makati, said the House has “sunk lower than imaginable” by sitting on ABS-CBN’s franchise renewal bid.
“AND THANK YOU HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. I COME FROM YOU WHERE I WAS PROUD TO SERVE BUT YOU NOW, YOU TODAY HAVE SUNK LOWER THAN IMAGINABLE—AND IN THIS PANDEMIC. THE RENEWAL OF A MEDIA FRANCHISE IS NOT WHETHER YOU OR ANYONE ELSE LIKES IT: IT IS FIRST PRIORITY IN A DEMOCRACY,” he said.

The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) ordered ABS-CBN to shut down immediately since it failed to get a new franchise from Congress before its franchise expired on May 4. The agency ignored the House of Representatives’ order for the issuance of provisional authority for the network.
Locsin said it was a “shame” for both Congress and NTC to let ABS-CBN go off the air. He used to host the editorial segment titled “Teditorial” for “The World Tonight,” the nightly newscast of ANC, ABS-CBN’s cable news channel.
“I don’t watch TV much if at all but shutting down a major media outlet that has provided entertainment and comforting connection to tens of millions of OFWs and 80 million Filipinos, not to mention dependable news of real not made up events is a shame for NTC and Congress,” he said.
