Palace warns malls: Follow social distancing or else face closure

By Prince Golez

Malls that do not comply with state-ordered physical distancing protocols will be shut down, MalacaƱang said.

In a virtual presser Monday, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque reminded shoppers to maintain their distance from others to prevent the spread of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19).

“Sa mga malls na hindi sumusunod sa social distancing at crowd control, well, madali lang po ‘yan, ipapasasara po kayo muli,” according to him.

Roque warned the public on Sunday against any complacency after several areas of the country eased quarantine measures over the weekend.

“We must understand that we have started to slowly ease restrictions in order to revitalize the economy, and not because we are safe. We must learn from other countries like South Korea, which contained the spread of the virus but later experienced a spike in Covid-19 cases when citizens became relaxed,” he said.

The secretary was reacting to reports of people who trooped to the malls last Saturday after the modified enhanced community quarantine was implemented in Metro Manila and other parts of the country.

Videos and photos showed that the social distance rule was not strictly observed inside these establishments.
