Ping ‘not surprised’ with Sinas keeping top NCRPO post: Pero dapat managot pa rin siya

Sen. Panfilo Lacson is not surprised with President Rodrigo Duterte’s decision to retain P/Maj. Gen. Debold Sinas as head of the Metro Manila police, amid the controversy involving a violation of the enhanced community quarantine on his birthday last May 8.

But Lacson, who headed the Philippine National Police from 1999 to 2001, maintained Sinas should still face the appropriate punishment for his act of indiscretion.

“I won’t be surprised. Because that’s a different matter. And he’s facing criminal as well as administrative cases on account of the mananita case, while celebrating his birthday. But his performance as NCRPO director is different from that singular act of indiscretion, shall we say. He really set a bad example,” Lacson said in an interview on ABS-CBN News Channel.

“And the President I think was thinking along the line of what he has done and what he is doing in implementing the ECQ in NCR. I think the President based his decision to retain him mainly on that,” he added.

Still, Lacson said Sinas is already facing an administrative case before the PNP Internal Affairs Service and a criminal case before the appropriate investigating agency.

He added that while he agrees with Duterte’s decision, Sinas “should not escape punishment for what he did.”

On the other hand, Lacson said it “cannot be denied” that the PNP and the NCRPO have been put in a bad light on account of that one singular act of indiscretion.

“Mali ang judgment because you are implementing ECQ at may naaresto. And then being the head of NCRPO himself, violating the ECQ, hindi talagang magandang example,” he said.

Lacson also reiterated that his call for “compassion” for Sinas stemmed from some netizens’ going to the extent of posting out-of-date photos or videos to humiliate Sinas.

“Make no mistake. I’m not saying he should be absolved doon sa dapat punishment na matatanggap niya sa kanyang ginawa. And I made it very clear,” he said.
