Marawi City is still in ruins three years after the deadly clash between government forces and violent extremists.
Former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV called out President Duterte over the apparent slow rehabilitation of Marawi City since the five-month battle that left a massive trail of devastation.
Trillanes said Marawi residents remain refugees as the government has yet to build a new city to replace the ruined city.
“After the destruction of Marawi 3 yrs ago, duterte promised to build a new modern city. Maraming nagtiis at umasa,” he tweeted.
Trillanes criticized Duterte for allegedly duping the people of Marawi about the planned rehabilitation program. “Fast forward today, still no new city and the people of Marawi are still refugees. Grabe manloko itong taong ito,” he said.
Government forces launched intense fighting and aerial bombing of militant-held areas during the battle of Marawi in 2017. The terror siege, led by the Maute group, left over 1,000 people dead and
displaced thousands more families from their homes.
