‘Wag umasa lagi sa ayuda! Cynthia Villar: Stranded workers should be allowed to work again

Senator Cynthia Villar wants workers stranded in Luzon due to the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) to go back to work instead of relying on government aid for survival.

Villar, whose family owns Vista Land and Lifescapes, one of the country’s largest construction and real estate companies, said the government should open up the construction, agriculture and manufacturing sectors amid the ECQ to avoid a “humanitarian crisis in the making.”

“We should come to the aid of these displaced workers immediately to avert further problems. Let them continue their work to be able to fend for themselves and provide for their families,” she said in a statement Wednesday (May 6).

Only essential industries, such as food production, business process outsourcing and healthcare, among others, are allowed to continue operations during ECQ. Metro Manila and other provinces with high cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are under ECQ until May 15.

The construction sector accounts for 10 percent of the workforce in the country. There is an estimated 3.9 million construction workers as of 2018. The Philippine Construction Association (PCA) cited that 1.3 million workers are expected to lose or have in fact lost their jobs due to the implementation of the community quarantine.

To minimize the risk of construction workers catching COVID-19, Villar said companies which will be allowed to operate should follow government-implemented health and safety protocols such as social distancing and wearing of face masks. The employers can also provide for their transport or accommodation if necessary.
