Malacañang said that returning overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) are receiving “VIP treatment” from the government amid the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic.
This ran contrary to allegations made by labor group Migrante International that the Duterte administration was giving OFWs stranded in Manila due to the lockdown a “garbage-like” treatment.
Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said the government shouldered the cost of OFWs’ coronavirus testing and transportation.
“Naku, inuwi po natin ang lahat ng manggagawa natin, binigyan natin ng libreng PCR testing, binigyan natin ng libreng pamasahe sa eroplano, sa bus at sa barko,” Roque said during the Laging Handa public brieding aired on state media PTV-4 Saturday.
“Hindi po iyan garbage-like treatment, VIP treatment po iyan,” he added.
Migrante International had claimed in a statement released Friday that Filipino repatriates complained about being stuck in Metro Manila for more than a month and being “dumped like garbage” at the airport.
“Famished and made to sit close to heaps of junk airport equipment, our kababayans whom the government repeatedly tag as ‘modern-day heroes’ are treated like outcasts as they haplessly await for their provincial flights,” the group also said.
