The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) is reportedly squeezing hotel owners for money even as they struggle to remain afloat amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Politiko learned that OWWA is demanding a P200 rebate per room in hotels used as quarantine facilities for Filipinos returning from overseas.
A source told Politiko that the P200 rebate is “standard operating procedure,” which means hotels must comply if they want to keep OWWA’s account.
P200 may seem like a paltry amount, but the amount easily translates to P2.3 million since the government has secured around 11,500 hotel rooms as quarantine facilities.
On top of earning millions from room rebates, OWWA is also reportedly making money by demanding exclusivity in supplying the food of Filipinos holed up in the hotels.
Politiko’s source said OWWA insists on using a preferred catering service for meals of the Filipinos under quarantine, instead of tapping the hotels’ kitchens.
OWWA’s insistence on getting rebates and cornering catering services makes one ask, “Sinong kumikita?”
