‘Confirm if possible’: Robredo bares new modus of fake news peddlers to evade criminal charges

Opponents of Vice President Leni Robredo are allegedly using a new tactic to avoid facing criminal charges for posting fake information online.

Robredo on Tuesday (June 23) shared on Facebook screenshots of social media posts claiming the Office of the Vice President (OVP) delivered spoiled meals to frontliners at the Diliman Doctors Hospital in Quezon City.

The posts contain either of the phrases, “confirm, if possible” or “is this true?”

“Please report this fake news peddler who is trying to skip liability with his ‘confirm, if possible’ line. This has never happened. I never went to this hospital. My spokesperson, Atty Barry Gutierrez said he has never visited any hospital during the entire duration of the ECQ/GCQ nor ever called this particular hospital,” Robredo said on her Facebook page, referring to her spokesperson, Barry Gutierrez.

The Vice President said the team which delivered the hot meals also did not receive any complaint from the frontliners.

Robredo vowed to go after those who posted the misleading information, saying she will no longer tolerate fake news involving her.

“If there was no malice, you should have checked first before posting. You should know that posting fake news makes you criminally liable. Let us report him plus all those who reposted. Take screen shots of everything, including those who reposted because we will go after all of them,” she said.
