The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) denounced on Friday the arrest and detention of an elderly leader of the Batil-ang Peypeyen Clan in Besao, Mountain Province by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).
Military agents picked up 70-year-old Annie Tauli, the elder sister of Vicky Tauli-Corpuz, the former United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, in Barangay Kin-iway Thursday, the CPP said in a statement.
“The Party condemns the media disinformation campaign orchestrated by National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon himself where Tauli is being described as a ‘top CPP leader’ who ‘came forward to clear her name’ to obscure the fact that she was arrested unlawfully and is being detained without charges,” according to the rebel group.
Citing reports, CPP said that Tauli is not facing any criminal charges but has been subjected to military red-tagging, surveillance, and harassment for her involvement in local people’s struggles.
Tauli-Corpuz has also been repeatedly red-tagged by the AFP, they noted.
