Legarda files bill promoting heritage mapping among Filipinos

Deputy Speaker and Antique Rep. Loren Legarda on Tuesday filed a bill mandating all local government units (LGUs) to conduct a cultural mapping of their areas for tangible, intangible and natural heritage.

House Bill 6891 will be known as “An Act Strengthening the Conservation and Protection of National Cultural Heritage through Enhanced Cultural Heritage Education Program and Cultural Mapping.”

The bill aims to amend Republic Act 10066 or the National Cultural Heritage Act, thus mandating all local government units (LGUs) to conduct a cultural mapping of their areas for tangible, intangible and natural heritage.

According to Unesco, cultural mapping, or heritage mapping, is the process of identifying existing natural and cultural heritage resources in a certain area, with the end goal of conservation and preservation.

“Our culture and heritage are vital components of our identity and make us unique from the rest of the world. As we face a better normal, we should also remember who we are, through the culture and heritage that predate us,” Legarda said.

“A better normal also means understanding and preserving one’s past for the sake of a better future,” she said.
