MGCQ na dapat! Dominguez wants lockdown in Metro Manila, Calabarzon eased further

Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III believes it’s time to place Metro Manila and CALABARZON (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon) under modified general community quarantine (MGCQ) to stimulate economic growth amid the COVID-19 crisis.

At the meeting of the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) aired Tuesday (June 30), Dominguez said 60 percent of economic activity in the country takes place in Metro Manila and CALABARZON, so it’s important for business activities to resume in these two regions.

“About 60 percent or 67 percent of our economy is based on that area. That should move more to the MGCQ as quickly as possible because people have to start working,” he said.

Dominguez said COVID-19 will likely be around for a while so the government will have to find ways to live with it.

The Finance Secretary, however, said the government should continue keeping a close watch on the number of COVID-19 cases in Metro Manila and CALABARZON to ensure it remains under control.

“But do it on a place to place. And do it also on a company-to-company basis. So if the company has big spike close it down also,” he said.
